Nikki and Jack stepped through the open glass doors of the pharmaceutical research facility located on the outskirts of Nashville. Inside, the lobby, with its glass walls and stark white–tiled floor, opened up four stories to a huge skylight that bathed the modern space in light.

“Wow,” Nikki said, heading for the large receptionist’s desk in the center of the lobby. “I wasn’t expecting this place to be so fancy.”

According to the information Gwen had sent them, Byrne Laboratories was a state-of-the-art facility set on ten acres of land. Three large buildings included over five thousand square feet of laboratory space plus offices and conference rooms for the more than a thousand employees. And while this newer company might be competing with dozens of long-standing corporations, it had found a place in the market and was growing rapidly.

Nikki walked up to the sleek silver-and-frosted-glass counter, where a young woman sharply dressed in a black blazer and matching skirt stood, and held up her badge. “I’m Nikki Boyd with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation—”

“Finally. Just a moment please.”

Nikki shot Jack a questioning look as the woman motioned for them to wait, then picked up her phone. “They’re here, Mr. King . . . yes sir.”

She turned back to them and flashed a bright smile. “Mr. King’s expecting you. He’ll be down in a minute himself to personally escort you upstairs. If you wouldn’t mind waiting for him by the first set of elevators just around the corner.”

Nikki’s brow rose as the woman handed them each a visitor’s pass, her smile never wavering. “Please wear the passes while you’re in the building, and you won’t have any trouble with security.”

“I’m sorry, Miss—”

“Carrie Jones.”

“Miss Jones. Who’s Mr. King?” Nikki asked.

“I assumed you knew. Mr. King is Mac Hudson’s boss. Well, technically, his boss’s boss.” A shadow crossed her perky exterior. “You are with the police, aren’t you?”

“Yes,” Nikki said.

“Then Mr. King will be arriving any moment, and he can explain everything to you,” she said, pointing to her left. “If you need me to take you to the elevators—”

“We’ll be fine, thank you,” Jack said.

The heels of Nikki’s black boots clicked against the tiled flooring as she and Jack made their way to the elevators, past a row of contemporary, large-scale artwork.

“Did Gwen tell him we were coming?” Nikki asked.

“Not that I know of.”

Elevator doors slid open as they rounded the corner. A man in his midfifties stepped out, wearing a dark gray suit, a paisley tie, and thick-rimmed, black glasses.

“You’re with the local authorities?” he asked, popping an orange Tic Tac into his mouth.

Nikki nodded, then showed him her badge.

“I’m Dwight King.” Sweat glistened across his forehead as he stepped back into the elevator, despite the air conditioners that seemed to be working overtime. “Please . . . if you don’t mind, you can follow me back upstairs.”

“You and your secretary seem to be expecting us,” Nikki said as the elevator doors closed.

“I thought you were here about Mac Hudson?”

“We are,” Nikki said.

He punched floor 4, then turned around to face them.
